The Friends of the R H Johnson Library support a lecture series usually presented on the last Wednesday of the month on topics of health, history, and community resources. 

The Friends of the Library Speaker will be on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at 2 p.m. at the Lecture Hall of the R. H. Johnson Rec Center (next to the Sports Pavilion). Angela Bergelt, a Southwest Monarch Study Citizen Researcher, will be giving a presentation WINGS IN PERIL: The Decline of the Western Monarch Butterfly

Learn about the Monarch lifecycle, migration pattern, challenges facing Monarchs, tagging practices, how to become a citizen scientist and ways to encourage Monarchs into your yard.

It is a free event, but tickets are required. Pick up your free ticket from the checkout desk of the library. The limit is two tickets per person. Your ticket reserves a seat until the start of the event. Please note entry after the start time will be subject to seat availability.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Angela Bergelt, a nature enthusiast and amateur bird photographer lives in Estrella Mountain Ranch here in Arizona. Alongside her passion for capturing the beauty of birds, specifically hummingbirds, she is actively involved in tagging Monarch butterflies as part of the Southwest Monarch Study in their efforts to track their migration to Mexico and coastal California.  As a citizen scientist since 2016, she has dedicated herself to studying, photographing and contributing to the conservation of these magnificent creatures.  She enjoys educating others about the wonders of Monarch butterflies and how they can help Monarchs and other pollinators in their own backyards.
